The turn to secession in Catalonia

Lecture by Dr Andrew Dowling of Cardiff University on the contemporary pro-independence movement in Catalonia

Public lecture on "The Turn to Secession in Catalonia" This talk will focus on the Catalan independence challenge in Spain and examine its origins and prospects for resolution. Since the mid-2000s, the Catalan secessionist movement has become a key protagonist in the territory’s political landscape, moving from the margins to become the axis of political representation. This talk places the movement in context and argues that its emergence can be accounted for by a series of structural changes which include the evolution of Catalonia’s weight within Spain, identity shifts and comparative economic decline. The turn towards secession has been further accelerated by the breaking of a political consensus centred on a revised and updated statute of autonomy (2005-2010). These phenomena have intensified since the post-2008 economic crisis which has resulted in pro-independence civil mobilisation articulating a moderate protest movement. Speaker note: Dr Andrew Dowling is a lecturer in Hispanic Studies at Cardiff University. His research centres on the contemporary history and politics of Catalonia and Spain. He is the author of a monograph entitled Catalonia since the Spanish Civil War: Reconstructing the Nation (Sussex Academic Press, 2012), which has also been published in Spain. Other published work includes, ‘Convergència i Unió, Catalonia and the new Catalanism’ in Sebastian Balfour (ed.), The Politics of Contemporary Spain (Routledge, 2005) and articles in the Journal of Contemporary History, the International Journal of Iberian Studies and Catalan Review.
