Jesus Christ in some modern Arabic Islamic poetry
This talk discusses images of Jesus Christ in modern Arabic Islamic poetry, including different examples from 20th century and contemporary poets.
Beginning with a general discussion of the images of Jesus Christ in pre-modern Arabic Islamic literature and his place in Islamic piety, this talk discusses some images of Christ in modern Arabic Islamic poetry. It includes some poems by Ahmad Shawqi (1868-1932), Fadwa Tuqan (1917-2003), Ahmad Dahbur (1946----), Mahumd Darwish (1941-2008) and Muhammad al-Fayturi but paying special attention to one of the most profound poetic statement of them all, Badr Shakir al-Sayyab’s (1926-1964), Christ After the Crucifixion. The lecture ends with some reflections on the implications of this Muslim preoccupation with Jesus Christ for our present times.
