Algerian Muslim Women in Catholic Ireland

Dr Shanneik will discuss results of her ethnographic research on Arab Muslim women in Ireland and will focus on conceptions of home among Muslim women from Algeria.

This paper will look at the different conceptions of ‘home’ among Algerian Muslim women living in Ireland. Home is not only understood as a geographical and national term but also as a symbol of identity and belonging to a specific ethnic, religious and/or political community after migration. What conscious or unconscious negotiations and implications for belonging to a specific identity or community can be observed among Algerian Salafi and Muslim Brotherhood-oriented Muslim women in Ireland? What are the different pre- and post-migratory social, political and religious factors that influence such negotiations? This paper is presents the outcomes of ethnographic research undertaken among Arab Muslim women in Ireland between September 2009 and September 2010. Yafa Shanneik is part-time lecturer at University College Cork.
