From Sailors to Migrants: History and Integration of Muslims in Ireland
Dr Vivian Ibrahim's presentation discusses the early presence of Muslims in 19th century Ireland as well as current policies by the Irish state to integrate Muslims. This presentation aims to provide an overview of early ‘Muslims’ in Ireland. Examining sailors and migrants- including Prof. Mir Aulad Ali (1861-1898) of Trinity College and the first settled community of 1932- this paper will look at how ‘Muslims’ came to Ireland and were perceived in Dublin up to 1945. Assessing the contemporary, the presentation will then discuss policies that have been implemented by the Irish state in attempt to foster an ‘integrated Ireland’. In particular, Garda policies, banking and measure implemented by the Ministry of Integration will be analysed. This presentation is based on an overview of all the research Dr Vivian Ibrahim conducted over 2009-10 for the IRCHSS funded project ‘The history of Islam in Ireland’ based at UCC.
