President's Athena SWAN Symposium

Symposium considering Gender Equality and Intersectionality

, the Athena SWAN Charter was established in 2005 to encourage and recognise commitment to advancing the careers of women in science, technology, engineering, maths and medicine (STEMM) employment in higher education and research. In May 2015 the charter was expanded to include work undertaken in the arts, humanities, social sciences, business and law (AHSSBL), and in professional and support roles, and for trans staff and students. It is important to note that the charter has broadened to engage with gender equality more broadly, and not just barriers to progression that affect women. In addition to the core consideration of gender equality, our symposium is taking intersectionality as a key focus and is keen to explore the ways in which gender crosscuts a myriad other factors including ethnicity, religious identity, class, age among other considerations.
