The Politics of Research

HR Researcher Conference 2018 with a host of very interesting speakers

Key Note Speaker: Dr Graham Love Chief Executive of HEA Abstract: In the middle of the Second World War the Manhattan Project catapulted physics beyond the realms of the laboratory and out onto the political arena. More than a decade later the shock waves left in the wake of Sputnik would become a catalyst for the race to the moon. Since then, conversations on exploration, research and development have become part of everyday life. Today, governments through various instruments invest heavily in research within universities and have created an increasingly complex funding and prioritised environment. Many researchers find that to be successful in this arena they must employ multiple strategies to engage with their stakeholders. As a result, researchers have had to become experts at operating politically within the ever changing world of research. This conference is aimed at all staff and will showcase the personal experiences of speakers in a wide variety of fields from within UCC and nationally. Speakers will discuss their own encounters with the politics of research exploring the many ways that politics and research collide whether it is internal group politics or politics on a global scale. In this context we intend that speaker’s address any aspect of the politics of research that they think will be of interest.
