George Boole Maths Club
A fun interactive Maths Camp for children aged 9-12. This is a six week programme beginning Saturday April 18th.
In 2015, University College Cork celebrates the bicentenary of George Boole, 1815-64. Born in Lincoln, Boole was a mathematical genius who was largely self-taught. His appointment as the first Professor of Mathematics at this college in 1849 provided the opportunity to develop his most important work, 'An Investigation of the Laws of Thought'. Boole is a pivotal figure who can be described as the ‘father of the information age’. His invention of Boolean algebra and symbolic logic pioneered a new mathematics. His legacy surrounds us everywhere, in the computers, information storage and retrieval, electronic circuits and controls that support life, learning and communications in the 21st century.
As part of the George Boole Bicenterary celebrations, UCC, and George Boole 200 have linked up with Anyone 4 Science to provide a fun, hands-on maths club for children. The club which will be suitable for 9 - 12 year olds will take place in the college on a Saturday. The next term will commence on April 18 and run for 6 weeks.
