30 of Years Erasmus in Ireland: Study abroad in research and practice conference

The School of Language, Literatures and Cultures hosts the only conference taking place in higher education in Ireland celebrating 30 years of Erasmus.

In our increasingly globalised village, crossing international and linguistic borders has become commonplace resulting in growing international recognition of the importance of study abroad (SA) in education. The global workplace ensures that multilingualism and international experience are no longer a luxury but an economic necessity. While many third-level language courses require a portion of the official studies to be spent in the target language country, cross-border organisations are also investing heavily. The Erasmus programme celebrates its 30th anniversary year in 2017 and currently provides nearly €2bn of funding per year for education and training. Taking the full spectrum of SA into account, UCC School of Languages, Literatures and Cultures presents a unique one-day conference incorporating research papers and practice-focussed discussion groups from a range of disciplines. Our plenary speakers are Dr Martin Howard, head of the School of Languages, Literature and Culture at UCC and a globally-recognised expert in Study Abroad and second language acquisition; and Prof Fred Dervin of the University of Helsinki - a world-renowned expert in intercultural education. The event will conclude with a panel discussion involving speakers from the UCC international office, the HEI, Leargas, the co-ordinator of one of the first Erasmus programmes in Ireland and student participants in Erasmus programmes
