IASIL 2016

The annual meeting of the International Association for the Study of Irish Literatures. IASIl 2016 addresses the theme of Change and meets in University College Cork from the 25th to the 29th of July.

In the year in which Ireland marks the 100th anniversary of the Easter Rising, IASIL 2016 invites a wide-ranging discussion of change in Irish culture. 2016 also marks the fiftieth anniversary of the death of Frank O’Connor, a writer whose life was irrevocably changed by the experience of political revolution, and whose writings reflect ceaselessly on blocked paths to change in the Ireland of his day. To what extent has Ireland changed because of its literature? Have we been too preoccupied with narratives of revolution and crisis? Do we have a sufficiently nuanced and differentiated sense of change across the centuries of Irish writing? Hosted by UCC’s School of English, the conference welcomes papers that embrace the full range of research within the School, including creative writing; digital humanities; film and screen media. IASIL 2016 will also feature a programme of cultural events and performances in Cork city, as well as an afternoon trip to Cobh, including the Queenstown Story at the Cobh Heritage Centre. Plenary lectures will be given by: Dr Heather Laird, University College Cork Dr Anne Mulhall, University College Dublin Prof Jahan Ramazani, University of Virginia
