Transitions and Continuities in Contemporary Chicano/a Culture Conference

Transitions and Continuities in Contemporary Chicano/a Culture Conference and Art Exhibition

The notion of transition seems particularly pertinent at this historical juncture, a point somewhere between the hegemonic sweep of globalising neoliberalism and a future as yet uncertain. Continuity, on the other hand, marks that sense of indebtedness to the past that involves conflict, tension but also creativity. This conference will aim to explore the notions of transition and continuity as they are articulated in recent Chicano/a culture including film, television, literature, theory, art, music, performance and theatre and other genres and narrative modes including corridos, mitos and folklore. Guest speakers include: Cherríe Moraga Celia Herrera Rodríguez Alica Gaspar de Alba Alma Lopez Two art exhibits will run concurrently with the conference. "EnAguas EnTlalocan / Prayer for Mother Waters" by Celia Herrera Rodriguez "Our Lady and Other Queer Santas" by Alma Lopez These will be on display in the O'Rahilly Building, University College Cork on Friday 24th & Saturday 25th June 2011.
