Boom to Bust: Irish Social Policy in Challenging Times
This conference aims to consider and debate the effect of the rapidly changed environment from economic boom to bust on the Irish welfare state and social policy.By critically examining the emerging social impacts of the recession, questions to be considered at the conference include: o What does the economic recession and emerging responses signify for the nature and direction of the Irish welfare state? o What are the consequences for social policy of the nature of the government’s response to economic recession? o Are there lessons to be learnt from episodes of economic recession in Ireland in the past, the 1980s for example? o Are there lessons to be learnt from experiences of economic crisis in other countries? o What impact is the economic recession having on particular social groups, such as the unemployed, migrants, young people, children, older people etc? o What impact is the economic recession having on social services such as social welfare, education, housing, healthcare etc?
