Con(tra)vention: Crime and the Boundaries of Genre

Con(tra)vention logo by Marco Amici

Third Interdisciplinary Conference of the Atlantic Alliance of Universities (NUI Galway, University of Limerick, University College Cork) Crime Genre Research Group.

The conference focuses on issues of contamination, cross-fertilization or hybridization of the crime genre, in its literary and screen manifestations, by other narrative forms, such as historical narrative, social and/or political commentary, science fiction, ‘true crime’, computer games, etc. Papers refer to a wide range of language areas, although, in the interest of interdisciplinary debate, they will be delivered in English. A large number of disciplines are represented, including modern languages, film studies, literary and cultural studies, gender studies, history, geography, sociology, philosophy and political science. There are three keynote speakers: Katharina Hall, Senior Lecturer in German Studies at Swansea University, will speak on ‘The Crime Writer as Historian’; Italian author, Simone Sarasso, will give a paper on ‘Transmediality: Autopsy of Genre and the Birth of the New World’; writer and academic, Nicoletta Vallorani (Università di Milano), will address the topic of ‘Lady Macbeth, Derek Raymond and the Genealogy of Blood in Contemporary European Crime Fiction’. Nicoletta Vallorani and Simone Sarasso will also read from their own work at the reception on Friday evening. The conference includes an optional tour of the Cork City Gaol Heritage Centre, with a buffet meal on the Saturday evening. For full details, see the conference website.
