An out of this world modern rock musical!Failure, young love, parental pressure, abortion, homosexuality, suicide, sex, abuse, repressed hormones and getting kicked out of school. It’s not the description of the next hot reality T.V. programme, it’s the plot line to an out of this world musical being staged in Cork’s Granary Theatre. Spring Awakening is a modern rock musical directed by Tony McCleane-Fay, who directed Rent in Cork Opera House last year. Tony and Grammy award winner Duncan Sheik composed the music to accompany the storyline. His songs range from alternative-folk ballads to upbeat rock numbers, all with lyrics that truly speak to the raw emotions experienced by the actors on stage. For the songs the actors whip out hand held microphones or join the live rock band and the show becomes a music gig. Shane Ffrench is Musical Director and his band blend beautifully with the wonderful singing of the cast. The set and lighting design by Steve Neale make for amazing visuals. The stage is set in traverse, with the live rock band fully involved in the action of the play. Props and furniture are on view throughout and are inventively used and re-used, a dazzling array of lighting styles juxtapose the stark reality of the storyline with the electric emotions of the teenage mind. The audience members practically sit on the stage and feel they are part of the show. Philip McTeggart-Walsh’s exciting choreography brings a raw energy to these multi-talented actors. From the moment the audience enter the Granary building they are immersed in the magical world of Spring Awakening, where the set spills out into the foyer. This show will make you laugh, cry, bring back memories of your youth and above all will have you tapping your feet and singing long after you leave the auditorium.
