The award-winning Atlas of the Great Irish Famine will be launched in Sydney on Thursday, August 22nd, 2013 at 6pm. Published by University College Cork, the Atlas of the Great Irish Famine is considered one of the most important volumes ever produced on this pivotal period in modern Irish history. It features over 50 essays by the world’s leading Irish Famine historians, more than 400 images illustrating aspects of the Famine and its impact and a collection of some 200 digitized maps, many created from census records of individual parishes and townlands, which show the legacy of the Famine in terms of population decline. John FitzGerald, University Librarian and Mike Murphy, Cartographer in the Department of Geography at University College Cork will present and discuss this hugely significant publication at a reception in the State Library of New South Wales. Minister for Arts, Heritage and the Gaeltacht, Jimmy Deenihan, and celebrated author and historian, Thomas Keneally, will be in attendance. If you would like to attend the Sydney launch please email Karen Kelly on firstname.lastname@example.org before August 9th.
