24 June to 30 August 2019 (10 weeks)

 The Language Centre offers full-time summer courses in General English, exam preparation and English for Academic Purposes. The General English courses are from Pre-intermediate (A2) level to Proficiency (C2)*. There are also afternoon classes focusing on Business English, English for Academic Purposes (EAP),Grammar Clinic & Exam Strategies and Focus on speaking. One-to-one tuition is also available. The maximum number of students in a class is 15. Students may register for our summer school for a minimum of two weeks or up to a maximum of ten weeks, starting on any Monday.

In addition to your English classes we include a Cultural Social Programme which offers excursions, visits, lectures and evening activities. Last year students visited a range of local attractions which included Blarney Castle, Cork City Gaol, Fota House, Mitchelstown Caves as well as attending events including Quiz and Bingo nights. Option A

General English

Classes focus on developing communicative competence across all four skills: speaking, listening, reading and writing, as well as grammar, vocabulary and pronunciation. Courses follow a class set of books which is further supplemented with culturally relevant, authentic materials. Students give presentations on a weekly topic.

Option B

English for Academic Purposes (EAP)

Classes focus on equipping students with the skills and language necessary for teaching and learning in an academic environment, including giving presentations, understanding lectures, writing a thesis, and editing and proofreading academic writing. Extensive use is made of newer technological initiatives in academic learning environments such as creating podcasts, videos and vlogs.

Cambridge First Preparation Course (FCE)

Intensive classroom practice of all 4 papers following a course book, developing techniques and strategies for success.

Cambridge Advanced Preparation Course (CAE)

Intensive classroom practice of all 4 papers following a course book, developing techniques and strategies for success.

IELTS Preparation Course

Intensive classroom practice of all 4 papers following a course book, developing techniques and strategies for success.

Business English

Classes focus on equipping students with the skills and vocabulary necessary for effective communication in business, including negotiating, giving presentations, networking, emailing etc.

Focus on Speaking

Conversation classes on a variety of general interest topics using debates, discussions, and role-plays designed to develop fluency.

Option H

Focus on Writing

Classes focus on the development of writing skills, particularly essays/dissertations and reports (suitable for students preparing for IELTS), as well as functional writing (e.g. emails, CVs, applications).

Pronunciation

Tailor-made classes to assist students with pronunciation difficulties, including the sounds of English, word stress, sentence stress, intonation and connected speech.

One-to-One

Individual attention is given to the student in terms of specific language wants and needs e.g. presentations skills, specialised vocabulary, pacing tuition at student’s own language and motivation level. Students receive detailed feedback and strategies for improvement.
