Project Description:

The anthropogenic atmospheric burden of mercury has trippled over the last century due to rapid global industrialisation and explotation of fossil fuels, e.g. burning of coal for power generation. Mercury, and especially organomercury compounds, are toxic to humans, plants and animals,
therefore determination of mercury cycling through the atmosphere, aquatic and terrestrial ecosystems is an important area of research. However, current techniques though sensitive, suffer from poor temporal resolution, making them unsuitable for determination of mercury fluxes using
direct eddy covariance. This project will capitalise on recent advances in diode lasers and optical  cavities to develop a higly-sensitive, fast-response sensor, suitable for determination of gaseous-elemental mercury fluxes via eddy-covariance, with potential for future investigation of mercury speciation in the atmosphere.
