Project Description: The objective of this project is to develop nano-porous silica nanoparticles using novel and environmentally benign synthetic routes. Whilst many processes already exist for the production of such particles, none have been shown to be scalable or cost effective. The aim is to rapidly screen multiple silica synthetic routes using a custom-built reactor. We will then scale up the production process to beyond the kilogram scale and assess the feasibility of production to the tonne scale. The applications for this silica are vast and range from catalysis, nano-toxicity studies, 3D printing and drug delivery. These processes for the production of silica nanoparticles will be 'solvent free' and will offer cheaper particles, less toxic particles and less damage to the environment. These characteristics will allow the processes to be scaled up to industrially relevant scales (tonne). This differs from traditional manufacturing routes, which uses vast quantities of organic solvents which have large environmental footprints.
