Project Title: SAFI
Researchers: MaREI/ERI/UCC, ACRI-ST
Funding Body: EU
Period: 36 Months from October 2013 - September 2016
SAFI (Supporting out Aquaculture and Fisheries Industries) is a €1.9 million investment by the European Union via the FP7 programme. Running from 2013 to 2016, the project is set to make the vast potential of Europe’s €4.3 billion new Earth Observation System, Copernicus, of immediate benefit to Europe’s aquaculture and fisheries sectors. SAFI is a 3 year project aiming to develop a marketable decision support service for our aquaculture and fisheries industries. The benefits of historical and future satellite data shall be distilled and combined with in-situ measurements and research into finfish and shellfish habitat preferences, to produce a set of indicators regarding species growth / abundance performance. These indicators shall form the bedrock of an online web-GIS-based Decision Support Service, tailored to inform operators such as site assessors, planners, monitoring agencies, fishing fleets, aquaculture and fisheries investors, amongst others. It will allow you the confidence that your decisions are founded on robust scientific information and the latest in fisheries and shellfish research, knowledge and best practice.
