Full Project Title: As Quick as Quicksilver – Ultrasensitive Detection of Atmospheric Mercury and its Application to Mercury Speciation and Atmosphere-Surface Exchange
The aim of this project is to develop new and highly sensitive methods for monitoring atmospheric mercury, measuring mercury fluxes, and determining the speciation of mercury in the atmosphere. The work will initially focus on the use of sum frequency generation as a means to produce a useful spectroscopic light source at 254 nm, and then to use this source in an absorption or emission spectrometer.
Work in the project will also investigate the kinetics of gas phase oxidation of mercury by bromine and other atmospheric species in an atmospheric simulation chamber in partnership with collaborators in the USA.
