Project Description

Funding Body: COFORD
Project type: Research programme
Period: 2007 - 2012

The PLANFORBIO research programme (http://planforbio.ucc.ie) is a COFORD funded initiative comprising four inter-linked projects with over-arching objectives. This work is being carried out at UCC in partnership with researchers from TCD, WIT and Coillte. The aim of this programme is to address forest diversity and management focussing on forest types currently encourage through state policies and financial incentives. This work follows on directly from the very successful BIOFOREST project (http://bioforest.ucc.ie) and will include conventional production forests (both in first and second rotation) as well as native woodlands. These woodlands will be assessed for diversity (birds, invertebrates and plants) and long term monitoring sites will be established. Special studies will also be made of two individual species, the Hen Harrier and the Rhododendron. This programme has a focussed emphasis on outreach and investigation and will include at least 5 PhDs and several bachelors projects as well as 5 post-doctoral researchers.
