UCC Climate Lab 2017 Seminar Series

Dr. Simon O'Rafferty, Environmental Protection Agency will be giving a presentation on "The role of co-design and sustainable communities in an environmental policy context". 

Dr. O'Rafferty's presentation will take place on Monday, December 11th at at 2:00 p.m. in Seminar Room 1.28, Environmental Research Institute, Lee Road, Cork.

Dr. O'Rafferty's talk will share some insights from ongoing work with the EPA and previous projects linking issues of citizen and community engagement and behaviour change in the context of environmental policy. It will use projects on health-wellbeing and the circular economy as frames through which the scope and potential for citizen and community engagement can be explored. The talk will highlight some practical approaches, structural challenges in the Irish context as well as open up discussion on potential for interdisciplinary research.

Dr. Simon O’Rafferty - B.Des (Industrial Design), MSc (Sustainable Development), PhD (Sustainable Design Policy)

In late 2014 Simon returned home to Ireland after ten years living and working in the UK where he was senior researcher at the Ecodesign Centre and co-director of the social design agency Ark Lab. In these roles Simon has acted as an advisor to national and local governments, industry, third sector organisations and universities on design for sustainability and social innovation. His research explores the intersections of co-design for public service innovation, behaviour change and social innovation. He is currently a research fellow with the Environmental Protection Agency exploring the co-design of policy interventions for sustainable behaviour change in Ireland across topics such as Sustainable Communities and the Circular Economy.
