Biography

Dr Dervla Hogan is the Project Manager within the Programme Management Office of the South/South West Hospital Group and she also holds an Adjunct Lecturer position with the School of Public Health, University College Cork (UCC). Dr Hogan graduated with her PhD from UCC in 2017. In addition, she holds a Master’s Degree in Occupational Health, Safety and Ergonomics from National University of Ireland, Galway and a B.Sc. (Hons) in Physiology from UCC. Whilst completing her PhD, Dr Hogan held numerous research and administrative roles in UCC, including Department Manager in the Department of Epidemiology and Public Health, now School of Public Health.

Prior to starting in UCC in 2010, she worked as a Health and Safety Consultant for three years. Her specialist area was ergonomics and this is where she developed her keen interest in the prevention and/or reduction of WRMSDs. Dr Hogan’s PhD was in the area of Occupational Health and focused on work-related musculoskeletal disorders (WRMSDs) in Hand Intensive Healthcare Occupations and was entitled ‘Musculoskeletal symptoms in self-employed versus employed therapists: the role of training and social support’. The data which was used within this PhD comes from the HITS Study which was funded by the Institution of Occupational Safety & Health (IOSH). Dr Hogan is a Member of the Irish Ergonomics Society and a Student Member of the European Academy of Occupational Health Psychology. In addition, she is Communications Officer of the Irish Ergonomics Society.
