Nuclear Magnetic Resonance

Instrumentation currently in use was installed in 1999 and 2007 (with upgrades in 2001, 2006 and 2007) and consists of three BRUKER NMR spectrometers located in dedicated, air-conditioned laboratories in the Kane Building and Cavanagh School of Pharmacy Building, UCC.  The following instruments are available to support research and teaching activities in chemistry and ABCRF:

A BRUKER AVANCE 300 NMR spectrometer (available on open access via ICONNMR for authorized users), equipped with a 5 mm broadband multinuclear probe with ATMA, BOSS-II shim set, Z1 gradient controller and variable temperature facility (- 60 0C to + 180 0C); a dedicated 11B NMR probe with proton decoupling channel, a BACS-60 sample changer, a HPxw4300 workstation and TOPSPIN (1.3) software operating system.

A BRUKER AVANCE 400 NMR spectrometer (available on open access via ICONNMR for authorized users), equipped with a 5 mm QNP probe( 1H, 13C, 31P, 19F)  with BOSS-II shim set, Z-1 gradient controller, a BACS-60 sample changer, probe heater, a HPxw4300 workstation, TOPSPIN (1.3) operating software and BRUKER NMR GLP license.

A BRUKER AVANCE 500 NMR spectrometer, equipped with a 5 mm dual C/H probe, Z1 gradient, a 5 mm QNP (1H, 13C, 31P, 19F) probe, with ATMA, BOSS-II shim set, Z1 gradient controller, 2H lock switch,  variable temperature capability (including NMR experiments at -90o C on dual C/H  probe), BCU-05 sample chiller, a SIXPACK sample changer (with ICONNMR), a HPxw4300 workstation, TOPSPIN  (1.3) software and BRUKER NMR GLP license.

The NMR instrumentation is equipped with an archive and data reprocessing system consisting of BRUKER 1DWINNMR, TOPSPIN (version 2.0) Processing/Presenter software and Dell PRECISION 390 data servers. All instruments are supported by uninterruptible power supply (UPS) backup, compressed air supply (to dew point -60oC) and a liquid nitrogen plant.  An NMR service to Irish pharmaceutical and fine chemical industry is available.  For further information, contact Dr. D.G. A Varian Chemagnetics CMXLite 300 MHz apparatus provides facilities for Magic Angle Spinning NMR study of solids.  13C, 29Si, 1H, 139La, 31P studies have been carried out on a commercial basis. Applications include determining the structure of Pt compounds, studies of the crystallinity of polymers, and the structural content of glass ceramics.  More information can be obtained from Prof. Mick Morris.
