UCC IEEE Student Branch success in IEEEXtreme competition

Congratulations to all the EEE students who participated in the IEEEXtreme 24-hour Programming Competition. IEEEXtreme is a global challenge in which teams of IEEE student members – supported by an IEEE Student Branch, advised and proctored by an IEEE member – compete in a 24-hour time span against each other to solve a set of programming problems. The newly-formed UCC IEEE Student Branch supported 30 participants organized in 10 groups competing from 01:00 am Saturday 20th October to 01:00 am Sunday 21st October 2012. One group (David McCarthy, Tadhg Lambe, Cian Cassidy) ranked in the top 10% worldwide, two groups (Ruairi Kenny, Henry Larkin, James Treanor, and Nasim Zeinolabedini, Anze Zitnik, Fiona Edwards-Murphy) ranked in the top 20% worldwide.

Special thanks go to all the faculty and staff who have contributed directly and indirectly to make all this possible at all levels; administration, logistic and technical support, from granting permissions and general arrangments to computer settings.

Above all, special thanks go to Dr. Domenico Zito (UCC IEEE Student Branch Advisor) and also to EEE students Kilian O'Donoghue (UCC IEEE Student Branch Chair), Philip Marraccini (UCC IEEE Student Branch Treasurer), Tadhg Lambe (UCC IEEE Student Branch Officer) and Cian Cassidy (UCC IEEE Student Branch Officer), who managed the initiative with great enthusiasm and professional diligence, took part personally in the competition, and obviously for their resilience!

Thanks also go to Dr. Kevin McCarthy, Dr. Richard Kavanagh, Dr. Liam Marnane and Dr. Bill Wright for serving as supervisors and proctors during the competition, and to Prof. Nabeel Riza for making all this possible.
