The Manchester Motor Skills Programme

Tuesday 22nd November 2011, Kane G20, 2-4pm

Dr Caroline Bond, Fieldwork Director to the Doctorate in Educational Psychology at Manchester University and practicing Educational Psychologist will be presenting a seminar on the Manchester Motor Skills Programme. The Programme was initially developed by Educational Psychologists in collaboration with schools and Occupational Therapists in response to a lack of local provision for children with motor skill difficulties in primary schools. It has been running in Manchester since 2006 and is also being rolled out in other local authorities.  In order to assist schools in developing their provision for children with motor difficulties the research team developed whole school review and development elements and a targeted programme for children at risk of motor skill difficulties. Dr Bond’s presentation will be focusing on this targeted programme. The Manchester Motor Skills Programme includes a motor skills assessment for KS1 and KS2 (Bond, Cole, Crook, Fletcher, Lucanz & Noble, 2007) and a flexible motor skills intervention. The assessment provides a benchmark against which children’s progress can be evaluated and supports targeted planning of motor skills sessions. An initial small scale evaluation provides promising evidence to support the use of the Manchester Motor Skills Programme (Bond, 2011).
