Dates:            Thursday, 8th, 15th, 22nd& 29th of November and 6th & 13th December

Time:             19:00 – 20:30

Venue:          O'Rahilly Building R326, University College Cork

This is a pilot project under the auspices of the School of Education, UCC. Coordinator is Dr Fiachra Long (

The team offering the workshop includes Professor Charles Conroy (formerly Professor of Old Testament Studies at Gregorian University Rome, Professor Kevin Cathcart (formerly Professor at UCD and currently Professor Emeritus in Old Testament Studies at the University of Oxford) and Dr Siobhán Dowling (currently RE methodology lecturer, School of Education UCC). No previous knowledge of the text is required. Charles Conroy will open the series with a number of sessions on the structure and meaning of the text; Kevin Cathcart will provide an overview of the text in the context of other legal Hebrew texts while Siobhán Dowling will present on the reception of the text in art and music.

The Book of Job describes how an innocent man, described as righteous, wrestled with God because he had lost everything – wealth, family, reputation, friends and health for no apparent reason. The modern reader may ask on foot of this text, why does God allow suffering in the world or how can there be a God in the face of such suffering but these questions may not be the ones posed by the authors of Job.

The workshops are designed for those who are unfamiliar with the text but want to get to understand it. It would be useful for RE teachers who want to come to grips with a key text in the Hebrew tradition. It is being trialled as a short course supporting the Continuous Professional Development of Teachers but it would also interest the general public. The workshop is free but places must be pre-booked by calling Carol Kennedy, School of Education at 4902465. Places are offered on a first come first served basis.

Yours sincerely,
