SAR Network UCC presents Dr Prosper Maguchu

UCC has long been involved with Scholars at Risk (SAR). SAR protects scholars suffering grave threats to their lives, liberty and well-being by arranging temporary research and teaching positions at institutions in our network as well as by providing advisory and referral services. SAR Europe is currently based in Maynooth University. The SAR Ireland committee recently decided to invite a scholar at risk to come to deliver a series of talks in Irish universities.

We are delighted to confirm that Dr Prosper Maguchu, a scholar from Zimbabwe, has been invited to speak in UCC as part of UCC’s Refugee Week and will do so on Friday 7th February - 11am - G18 – Brookfield.

The President, Professor Patrick O’Shea will be in attendance to welcome the speaker and the attendees to the event.

Dr Maguchu is coming on the invitation of Scholars at Risk (Ireland) to give seminars/presentations at QUB/UU/UCD/MU and DCU.

He is a lawyer and activist with a special interest in transitional justice, financial crimes, and large-scale conspiracies/serious crimes, and a human rights approach. Currently, he is a visiting scholar at a Dutch university. He has a decade of experience working as a human rights lawyer.

More details on SAR and their protection programme can be found here: https://www.scholarsatrisk.org/protection/ and on hosting a speaker here .

We are also pleased to confirm that this speaker is also supported by IFUT, who have agreed to collaborate in supporting this visiting speaker event, given that the issue of Academic Freedom is one about which IFUT has a special interest.

Free - all welcome. Organised by Angela Flynn (USWG & IFUT)
