Understanding the Public Sector Duty and UCC's pilot initiative (WW9, 11:00)

Speakers: Deirdre Toomey (IHREC), Dr Angela Flynn & Dr Karl Kitching

The Public Sector Duty is different from existing Equality legislation because it encourages institutions not simply to prevent inequalities, but to actively promote equality, and protect human rights. This session will highlight the rationale behind the Public Sector Duty. Deirdre Toomey, Jacqueline Healy and Donal Rice of the Irish Human Rights and Equality Commission will present what the Public Sector Duty involves. Dr Angela Flynn, School of Nursing and Midwifery will share her experience of completing the Professional Diploma in Human Rights and Equality. This diploma was developed in conjunction with IHREC to give public servants and others a better understanding of the place that human rights and equality occupy in public management and administration. Dr. Karl Kitching will finally give an overview of UCC's experience of conducting a pilot Public Sector Duty assessment on behalf of the Higher Education Sector.
