Making a Report

UCC encourages all individuals to come forward to seek support and assistance in relation to issues of sexual misconduct and sexual violence.  Reports of sexual misconduct will be treated seriously and objectively by UCC and with due regard for the rights and needs of both the Reporting Party and the Respondent.  The University will act sensitively, and Reports will be carefully and thoughtfully addressed through a process that is transparent and clearly communicated to all individuals involved. Incidents of sexual misconduct may potentially constitute a criminal offence.

We understand that it can be difficult to speak up about personal experiences of sexual violence or sexual harassment.  The University supports and encourages individuals to come forward as soon as they feel comfortable to do so.  There may be a number of reasons why someone feels they cannot come forward with a Report immediately and the University understands this.

While considering your options, it is advisable to document and record incidents as soon as possible and where possible attend at a Sexual Assault Treatment Unit for the purposes of preserving evidence.  If you need immediate crisis support, a list of support services can be found here.  In an emergency, always call 999/112.

Currently, members of the UCC community who have experienced an incident of sexual violence can report the incident in two ways.

  • They can make an anonymous report via SpeakOut, which is a platform where you can report an incident that happens at any third level institution in Ireland.  Please note direct support or investigation will not occur if an anonymous report is made; instead, anonymous reports are used to understand general patterns of sexual misconduct, and shape institutional responses across the Irish university sector.

  • If you would like to make the University aware and potentially take action, you can contact Campus Watch if you are a student, or HR if you are a staff member. [links to reporting places] This option allows you to notify the university, explore if informal resolution is appropriate, or request a formal investigation.

If you would like to report the incident externally, UCC can support you to do so.

You can report the incident to the Gardaí and the University will provide support where appropriate. The closest Garda stations to UCC are:

The Cork Sexual Violence Centre is an external support group that can also assist you to prepare for the court process, see more here:

What to expect during the reporting process

Everyone in the UCC community has the right:

  • To be treated with dignity, respect, and compassion at all stages of the process
  • To be provided with a link to support services via email and a printed version
  • To be informed clearly of all options in the process so that you can make informed decision
  • To have conflicts of interest be addressed
  • To be offered a support/safety plan
  • To be offered post process supports
  • To be assigned a designated support person that is independent and has no other role in the process
  • To raise an appeal
  • To be supported to report the incident to the Gardaí if applicable
