    Do UCC staff need to record all teaching activities?

    The Student's Union have raised the question of whether UCC staff are asked to record all teaching activities. As per the advice on our Getting Started website, we would like to remind staff that, generally speaking, teaching delivered online synchronously should be made available to students online as recordings in order to ensure equity of access for all. However, exceptions are possible.

    Should students be required to have their cameras on?

    Many staff have been asking about whether they should mandate students to turn their webcams on for live meetings. The OVPLT view is that you should not ordinarily require students to turn on their cameras as there may well be very reasonable explanations as to why students may not wish to be seen.

  • What is ‘Remote Invigilation/Proctoring’?

    01 Dec 2020
    What is ‘Remote Invigilation/Proctoring’?

    ‘Remote Proctoring’ refers to the use of technology to oversee an examination from a distance. ‘Proctoring’ is the term generally used in the United States, while ‘Invigilation’ is what we tend to use in Ireland.

    The concept stems from a belief that students taking exams online require some degree of invigilation, in the same way they would be invigilated during an on-campus examination.

    ‘Remote Invigilation’ has become synonymous with a particular range of software solutions that provide a wide range of solutions. These include:

    • checking the identity of a student;
    • real-time monitoring through webcams of students taking exams;
    • review of recorded exam sessions;
    • controlling student machine settings; and
    • reporting suspicious activity of students during remote exams.

    These activities can be carried out by human invigilators sitting in front of a bank of screens or in some case by artificial intelligence systems. The costs of operating these systems vary depending on what is required by the client.

    Clíodhna O'Callaghan, IUA Project Lead for UCC on ‘Enhancing Digital Teaching & Learning’ talks about the importance of this project for remote teaching and learning during Covid19’

    Can you tell us about yourself and your role in Digital Education in UCC?

    Having worked in UCC for five years I took up a project management role last December on an exciting IUA (Irish Universities Association) project called 'Enhancing Digital Teaching & Learning' (EDTL). This is a 3 year project, which is funded through the HEA’s Innovation and Transformation Programme, and is aimed at enhancing the digital attributes and educational experiences of Irish university students through enabling the mainstreamed and integrated use of digital technologies across the teaching and learning process. The project aims to mainstream digital in teaching and learning activities in Irish Universities, by addressing the professional development of all who teach or support teaching and learning.

    In the context of Covid-19, the project has re-focused to support a move to a more blended approach to teaching and learning in the academic year 2020/21, while adhering to the four project pillars:

    Why: MCQs give the learner a chance to stop and reflect on their learning, to make sure they’ve fully absorbed the material before continuing further. They are also a quick and efficient evaluation tool for students and/or teachers.

    How: MCQs can be easily created in Canvas using Quizzes.Next. See Guide here.

    Using Panopto to manage conflicting responsibilities during the Academic Year

    Since commencing lecturing in 2014, I often forewent relevant conferences during teaching term. I have, and will, always prioritised my responsibility to my students. However, three years on, I have come to realise that academia involves the often difficult task of balancing teaching, research, community engagement, and administration. As I come to the end of my PhD, I have been seeking out relevant conferences more actively. Unfortunately, many of these conferences continue to fall during the teaching term.
