Tom O'Mara Head of Digital Education

Biography

Tom O’ Mara is Head of Digital Education in UCC and is Manager of the Centre for Digital Education.

Tom sits on Digital, IT and eLearning committees and working groups both within and outside UCC including The Irish Universities Association (IUA) Enhancing Digital Capacity in T&L and Quality and Capacity, Validation and advisory panels for Quality and Qualifications Ireland (QQIT).

Tom has been a professional educator for over 25 years, working across the public and private sectors and a range of learning contexts before joining UCC in 2015 including. His prior experience includes:

  • English language teacher at third level in Thailand, Egypt and Ireland;
  • Instructional Designer in Research and Development of commercial elearning companies, designing content for online blue-chip and public companies;
  • Series Editor, Instructional Designer and Multimedia developer with TV/eLearning company; and
  • Distance Education Co-ordinator for the Irish National Adult Literacy Agency – design and development www.writeon.ie (providing 41,000 national literacy awards to 9,000 adult learners and serving 65,000 learners in 52 countries), 14 prime time TV series on RTÉ Ireland's National Television and Radio Broadcaster, running a team of 30 literacy tutors. NALA’s work in this area has been recognised as an example of best practice by the EU and UNESCO and is currently being replicated in several other countries.
