Continuous Site Improvement

Here in UCC we are committed to introducing changes and improvements to our website on an ongoing and continuous basis. Every quarter we review user submitted requests for changes. We bring these requests to our development partners and define a list of improvements that we will work on for the quarter. Some of these improvements are straightforward while others take a bit more time and investigation.

Research Page Layouts

Develop a standard UCC wordpress theme that is in keeping with the main UCC website design from a VI perspective (using the UCC fonts, color schemes and brand assets) / Not blog theme but new research site page layouts

Creating consistency on the wordpress platform / research sites will allow us to strengthen the brand, ensure compliance with brand guidelines and bring more of the digital estate under the UCC brand umbrella  Student Recruitment, Highlighting Teaching and Learning Experience, Highlighting Research Impact, Highlight Civic and Community Engagement, Highlight Diverse Working Environment  P3 - Medium In Progress July 2019
Site Planning Page Design Helper When creating new content on a page, you're given a whole load of different assets that can be used - but you need to go through the process before you have any preview of them. This is fine as it's shown in-context on the page, but it would be great if there were accompanying images for each asset that give a simple example of the element so you can see what it will look like prior to selecting it - so for example the "2017 - Landing Page Menu Block" would show the block with generic heading and a list of links, maybe in both mobile and desktop forms It will make is much quicker and more convenient to create content for the website as it will eliminate the need for going over and back between menus to find the right asset. Facilitating Blog Type Content We are seeking a solution to a blog format. We've moved onto the website for our blogs and are in agreement that it is better to move everything in-house. However the news items and stand alone blocks don't really work well for blogs for a number of reasons - take a look at our page here (scroll down as we've two versions of blog entries) https://www.ucc.ie/en/study/postgrad/postgraduateblog/ neither are ideal as they take up so much space per entry and there is no calendar of entries that a user can easily browser through. Also from the point of view of the blog owner, putting up content is very unwieldy as we'll have up to 50 entries to scroll through on CMS soon. We'd welcome a solution to this blog problem as they are a key content piece for promoting courses and for sharing on social media  Allow us to have a better blog platform that is easy to use from the blog owner point of view and for the end user to browse through.
A good blog allows for good content links from social media posts.
Use of blogs in student recruitment is very important.

Improved Cookie Notification  Let's look at improving the cookie notification so that it is not so intrusive and that is also allows more granular control of the cookies Better user experience and more control of cookies Student Recruitment, Highlighting Teaching and Learning Experience, Highlighting Research Impact, Highlight Civic and Community Engagement, Highlight Diverse Working Environment P3 - Medium In Progress July 2019
Add modal functionality to Link Box content types  Add modal window function to the connect boxes and the link boxes so that we can have graphical buttons that pop up forms Improved user experience Student Recruitment, Highlighting Teaching and Learning Experience, Highlighting Research Impact, Highlight Civic and Community Engagement, Highlight Diverse Working Environment  P2 - High In Progress July 2019
Improve photo display on connect boxes Box pictures a shaped (not as bright as original images) / 2017 - Connect Box. If the 'text' field is empty the shading on the image should be reduced as it dulls the images It would make sites look more vibrant Student Recruitment P2 - High In Progress July 2019
On-page "proceed down the page" control Like the arrow below the 2017 banner to move people down the page. I think something similar but independent of content type could be available. For example on https://www.ucc.ie/en/sit/ I'd like to add an arrow under the grid of services so that users can see the full menu, then one under the menu to get people to news. users will be able to navigate more easily. It will be obvious that there is additional content on the page. Student Recruitment, Highlighting Teaching and Learning Experience, Highlighting Research Impact P2 - High In Progress July 2019
Countdown timer content type I have been asked by the head of the school here if it may be possible to incorporate a countdown clock into the home/landing page of the school website to count to the start of the 25 year anniversary celebration week in November 2019. Hoping it might be looked into possibly? Improved user experience Highlighting Teaching and Learning Experience P3 - Medium In Progress July 2019
Allow upcoming event content to be highlighted A change to the news and views section so that events in the future can be highlighted. The content type looks great but would be great to be able to use it as a way to highlight upcoming events. At the moment if you use it the actual date of the event needs to be in the headline. The date in the the date span in the yellow box is the publish date and people will get confused Easier to promote upcoming events more clearly on the homepage. Highlighting Research Impact, Highlight Civic and Community Engagement P4 - Low Under investigation July 2019
Enable Instagram feeds in the social media block Add instagram as an option to the social media block  Instagram is one of the most popular social media platforms especially for our younger prospective students. We should include this   Student Recruitment, Highlighting Teaching and Learning Experience, Highlighting Research Impact, Highlight Civic and Community Engagement, Highlight Diverse Working Environment  P2 - High  In Progress July 2019
Modify timeline content type to allow more flexible time periods  update the timeline content type to allow for different scaled timelines (weeks, months, years, decades as well as non-delineated timeframes e.g. week 1, week 2, day 1, day 2 etc) so that we can present different timeframes across the site  It would make the current timeline content type more usable and allow us to present time based informaiton in a better way across the site   Student Recruitment, Highlighting Teaching and Learning Experience, Highlighting Research Impact, Highlight Civic and Community Engagement, Highlight Diverse Working Environment  P3 - Medium  In Progress July 2019
Improve content slide transitions (both time on page and time between slides)  Change the timing between banner slide items and make it clearer to the viewer that banner content will change after a period of time (perhaps introduce a "timer" indicator that the content is about to change from one banner to another)  Better value from the banner content type where the 2nd and 3rd items don't get viewed as much / It change over would draw the eye to the page, particular if it is idle/I haven't clicked out of it for a short time. The content would look fresh and more up to date. It would be less boring. The 1st border image gets all the attentional, the information highlighted on 2nd and subsequent transitions is getting ignored. I am getting bored seeing the same image for days. Don't make it too fast please. Student Recruitment, Highlighting Teaching and Learning Experience, Highlighting Research Impact, Highlight Civic and Community Engagement, Highlight Diverse Working Environment  P2 - High  In Progress July 2019
Allow greater choice for selection of source of news to be displayed on homepages  Add the option of feeding several branches to the 2017 News & Views item; in this case news from the school of law as well as news from its research centres that are structurally located under a different branch. Currently there is only the option of linking one branch to the item.  This improvement creates a stream of news of all the relevant areas, tailored to target audience, without duplication, showcasing a broader range of relevant news than if it only includes the core items. This highlights the School of Law as research active. In this case it's intended to pull in research related news from the research centres, better showcasing research activity and possibly in a different location news from law clinics to better showcase community engagement at a later stage. This supports goal 2 and 3 of the University Strategic Plan by improving dissemination of research and advertising community engagement to a broader audience.  Highlighting Teaching and Learning Experience, Highlighting Research Impact, Highlight Civic and Community Engagement  P4 - Low  Under investigation July 2019
Develop call to action button for course pages for display on the course banner  Call to action button that appears on the banner of a course page that allows us to do a number of things (launch video, form, other content)  Improve the UX on the course page, allow us to get users to video and rich conten tsooner, better calls to actions  Student Recruitment  P2 - High  In Progress July 2019

Facilitate long content better (continued from Q4 2018)

Explore this page - can the title be optional, can the links be coloured differently and can the anchors be made clickable

Previously we have a content type that could be expanded and contracted. I feel we need something back that operators in a similar way. This is especially necessary on long detailed pages. Such as the FAQ on the link below. If a page could be searchable in and off its self that would be great too. / In the example link above the link circles are being used to simulate a page containing tabs. Perhaps we need a content type that would allow you to step through a number of steps via a tabbed interface in the one page. For example: https://www.w3schools.com/howto/howto_js_tabs.asp and or this https://www.w3schools.com/howto/howto_js_full_page_tabs.asp this too
https://www.w3schools.com/howto/howto_js_vertical_tabs.asp

LONG CONTENT

I feel it would make long pages a lot more user friendly and aid users in finding information quickly / UCC has a lot of long form text as certain processes are very complex. I feel being able to display content in a tabbed manner would allow people to easily step through such process with ease  Student Recruitment, Highlighting Teaching and Learning Experience, Highlighting Research Impact  P3 - Medium Completed March 2019
Allow external links to be opened in new windows (continued from Q4 2018) Any content type that allows an external link MUST allow the moderator to add a target = new window It will make a lot of our content types better, allowing moderators to use best practice when it comes to linking to external sites  Student Recruitment, Highlighting Teaching and Learning Experience, Highlighting Research Impact, Highlight Civic and Community Engagement, Highlight Diverse Working Environment  P3 - Medium Completed March 2019
Make contact details content type address fields more flexible (continued from Q4 2018) Update the Contact Details content type so that it doesn't force people to take the general location (remove that list altogether) and just have a form field for the address. Until we have consistent address structure data, we are making people put innaccurate address info on their sites  It will stop us being wrong and presenting incorrect address information  Student Recruitment, Highlighting Teaching and Learning Experience, Highlighting Research Impact, Highlight Civic and Community Engagement, Highlight Diverse Working Environment  P3 - Medium Completed March 2019
Create variety in page layouts to better support research sites in T4  Develop standard UCC them for research site page layouts As we phase out Wordpress (as decided at DEWG in Jan 2019), we will create page layouts that will specifically support research sites so that sites previously being implemented in Wordpress can be supported in T4 Highlighting Research Impact P3 - Medium Continued in Q2 Q2 2019
Help end users understand how content types fit together  When creating new content on a page, you're given a whole load of different assets that can be used - but you need to go through the process before you have any preview of them. This is fine as it's shown in-context on the page but it would be great if there were accompanying images for each asset that give a simple example of the element so you can see what it will look like prior to selecting it - so for example "2017 - Landing Page MEnu Block" would show the block with generic heading and a list of links, maybe in both mobile and desktop forms Helps people better understand how to construct sites Student Recruitment, Highlighting Teaching and Learning Experience, Highlighting Research Impact, Highlight Civic and Community Engagement, Highlight Diverse Working Environment  P3 - Medium Continued in Q2 Q2 2019
Enhanced Link Box Content Type It would be useful to have a content type that is mid-way between a link and a connect box i.e. that allows a heading and a subheading in order to provide a heading and subheading in order to provide impact and accesibility Allows more flexibility with the link box (wrap and carousel) content types and allows us to better sign post to the page user what the link box is linking to Student Recruitment, Highlighting Teaching and Learning Experience, Highlighting Research Impact, Highlight Civic and Community Engagement, Highlight Diverse Working Environment P3 - Medium Completed March 2019

We've moved onto the (T4) website for our blogs and are in agreement that it is better to move everything in house. Ability to switch off default content for specific courses

We have a small number of courses that do not fit into our current postgraduate template. We are working within the current framework to ensure the correct information is up there for every course where possible but we have identified a small number of courses where the template does not work for them.

Could we look at removing the standard text for these courses, or have a blank template to fill out manually?

UCC is not liable for incorrect information on our prospectus (information regarding application fee and application process). User experience is much better. User will experience one version of truth, not conflicting and confusing information by putting in bold text to override the standard paragraph. The solution will help us deal with the other courses of a similar nature.  Student Recruitment  P1 - Urgent Completed 29 November 2018
Make the Site Name a link to the homepage of a given site

Hi, we find it very hard to get back to the landing page of our own office/section site when we are looking up information. We believe our users have the same problem. They search for information and then try to get back to the landing page to seek additional information they cannot do that easily. If you click the UCC logo you are on the UCC homepage and back at square one. Could we please make the text  to the right of the UCC logo clickable so that users can easily go back to our homepage? We know we can put a 'Home' button on the navigation under the main banner, but this doesn't solve the problem when someone is deeper in the site.

We also need to make this link a H1.

Huge benefit in being able to go back to the main navigation of our site with ease while browsing. Alternative is people are lost and have to restart search to get back to landing page.  Student Recruitment  P2 - High Completed 21 December 2018
Make landing page content below the fold more obvious

Landing page banners take up most of the content "above the fold", meaning any content below the fold is lost (e.g. the green circles below the banner on the homepage). Several people have mentioned this to us. We need to look at ways to either bring more content above the fold, or at least highlight to users that there is more to look at.

Also, the banner only displays at the top of the page - we should be able to reuse this module further down the page and on inner pages.

We also need to reduce the overall space between blocks on homepages see https://www.ucc.ie/en/research/ for an example (between menu and spotlight, between spotlight and news block) Look at eliminating space under banner

Enable General Content to display well on landing page  Increase the padding / margin on general content when used on landing page so that it is not right up against the browser edge / We need some type of text content for the 2017 Home page layout.
