I love it when a plan comes together

Slowly, but surely, we're drawing our plans together. For content planning that is. 

Last week I ran my first content planning workshop. The comms team in Alumni and Development were my willing guinea pigs and it was a valuable experience. For me as much as for them. For the first time in a website revamp initiative in UCC, we had the opportunity to really dig into the why and the what of the content we will need for a new website. The content planning workshop will be a valuable tool for all UCC website editors embarking on the creating, updating and maintaining of your websites. 

What the hell is a content planning workshop?

A valid question, imaginary reader, what the hell is a content planning workshop? Well it's kinda ronseal in that it does exactly what it says on the tin. It's a workshop I've developed based on the emerging web content strategy, and informed by content planning best practice, that will enable you to get the best out of your website. It's a framework that will guide you in discovering:

  • who your audience are
  • what their journey is
  • what their specific needs are at the different stages of the journey
  • how we can meet those needs with content.


Another equally valid question, imaginary reader. Basically I've drawn together the theory and some practical tools and techniques that will guide you through the process of planning content so that when it comes to creating the content, you've removed as much of the guess work as possible. 

Now it is a work in progress and will need to be refined further, but included in the workshop are activities such as: 

  • Persona development
  • User journey mapping
  • Creating User and Job stories
  • Developing page content tables

By the end of the workshop you will have the tools at hand to really dig into planning your website content. At the moment, I'll run the workshops on a case-by-case basis but once we have the full web content strategy in place we will include a process by which we can deliver these content planning workshops on a wider basis (plus we'll be rolling the theory behind them into the revamped website training that we are developing - more on that in a future post). 

For now, I just wanted to give folks an update and let them now that while you haven't heard from us in a while, work continues behind the scenes in developing our web content management eco system to help you get the most from your websites.
