Outline
This course provides a unique opportunity to learn about youth justice both in Ireland and internationally in a way that is practical and grounded both in theory and in the real life experience of professionals who work with children in conflict with the law. The course is taught by a leading professor in youth justice.
The module draws on a variety of legal sources in order to consider issues of youth justice and detention in Irish law, the law of other jurisdictions, including the US and New Zealand, and in international law. Subjects covered include: the nature of youth crime and characteristics of young offenders, the rights of young offenders, diversion and restorative justice, children in court, due process, serious crime, the role of the media, sentencing, noncustodial sanctions for children and detention.

On successful completion of this module, students should be able to:
- Examine theories of youth justice, including current research and trends;
- Identify international standards on youth justice
- Assess the Irish legal framework for youth justice, including the Children Act 2001 as amended
- Contrast juvenile law in Ireland with other jurisdictions;
Outline the core issues in youth justice including criminal responsibility, diversion,community measures, juvenile court and due process, sentencing and detention.
