Why seek ethical approval for L&T research?
Research on teaching and learning typically involves human participants. As such, ethical considerations should be taken into account in the design, conduct, and dissemination of learning and teaching research.
Within UCC, any research involving human participants which is intended for public dissemination must be approved by the Social Research Ethics Committee (SREC). Staff who conduct research on their teaching which is intended for personal use i.e. for professional reflection or course development, are not required to seek ethical approval from SREC.
Ethical procedures for scholars of teaching and learning have a protective function for the researcher, and the participants of the research. Engaging in ethical considerations also supports the researcher in planning their research, and enhances the credibility of the research.
