This course is your only route to Chemistry of Pharmaceutical Compounds, which offers a 5-month work placement in the pharmaceutical industry.
If you like chemistry as a subject, are happy working in a chemistry laboratory environment and enjoy the challenge of experimental investigation, then this course is for you.
If you are passionate about chemistry and enjoy scientific experiments and mathematics, you should think about studying chemical physics.
CK402 has 11 degree programmes available from this CAO entry, and you don't make that choice until the end of Year 1.
Biological and Chemical Sciences
About one-third of the course marks in your Chemistry degree is practical work - observing and understanding what you're doing.
Physics provides a framework to understand the processes, forces and structure of nature.
Physics and Astrophysics
The employability skills of our students are embedded in the activities that they do as scientists during their degree.
Coming out of UCC with a chemistry degree, you are highly respected and wanted by many disciplines. You're seen by employers as numerate, a problem solver and having good practical skills.
There is an unlimited range of employers who value the skills such as data analysis, critical thinking and problem solving that you get with a physics degree.
All Chemistry Courses are Fully Accredited by The RSC and The ICI

At first I thought I’d choose the biology route and then I fell in love with chemistry.
Graduate, BSc Chemistry
At first I thought I’d choose the biology route and then fell in love with chemistry and so I’m delighted that we were given the freedom to explore. We got the opportunity to make aspirin in one of our labs, and it was particularly interesting to see the process that goes into such an everyday item. It fascinated me and convinced me that chemistry was really right for me. What I really like about chemistry is that it is not all theory, there’s a lot of problem solving and maths involved, two things I’ve always loved.
The work placement allowed me to apply the science I learned, to industry.
Graduate, BSc Chemistry of Pharmaceutical Compounds
My love of chemistry came from secondary school. The best advice I got was when I was in 6th year, I was told to do a broad science course and get a taste of all the sciences. The work placement associated with CPC allowed me to apply the science I learned from my degree, to an industrial environment.
The course is unique and contains a perfect balance of chemistry and forensic science.
Graduate, BSc Chemistry with Forensics
As a British national, I chose UCC to study for my undergraduate degree because the course is unique, and contains the perfect balance of chemistry and forensic science. The school has great resources and the staff were always very supportive. I really enjoyed my time there and I would definitely recommend UCC if you are interested in studying a Chemistry course.
UCC is the only college in the country to offer a course in Chemical Physics.
Graduate, BSc Chemical Physics
UCC is a great college with fantastic facilities in a great city. It is also the only college in the country (and only one of a handful in the world) to offer a course in Chemical Physics. The course offers an excellent balance between theory and practical. For example at one point you’ll be learning about reactions that occur in the atmosphere or perhaps the implications of quantum mechanics and the next thing you know, you’re in the lab using lasers to analyse a sample or building a circuit board from scratch. There is something for everyone with a passion for science in this course.
I found that the staff in Chemistry were friendly and caring towards the students.
Visiting Student (from Malaysia)
UCC was my first choice because it is recognised as a leading research institute in Ireland. I found that the staff in the School of Chemistry were friendly and caring towards the students. The lecturers also created an enjoyable learning environment for the students. In addition, the School of Chemistry is fully equipped with advance facilities and instruments for teaching and research purposes.
