This study examines training and education in Irish credit unions and shows that there is a need for more collective learning. This is in line with current thinking which suggests that organisations will not be able to transform themselves for survival and growth, without collective or organisational learning. From the findings, there would appear to be a renewed interest in the ‘study group’ concept. The study group was fundamental to the formation of Irish credit unions but once the credit union becomes established, its use tends to fade. A concept which is old to the credit union movement is now seen as one of the great ‘bright new ideas’ in the conventional organisational literature.
