2012 International Year of the Co-operative

"Cooperatives are a reminder to the international community that it is possible to pursue both economic viability and social responsibility.” - United Nations Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon

2012 has been designated by the United Nations as the International Year of the Co-operative (IYC 2012). This is very significant recognition for the co-operative way of doing business.

The year has three main aims:

  1. Increase public awareness about cooperatives and their contributions to socio-economic development and the achievement of the Millennium Development Goals

  2. Promote the formation and growth of co-operatives among individuals and institutions to address common economic needs and for socio-economic empowerment

  3. Encourage Governments and regulatory bodies to establish policies, laws and regulation conducive to co-operative formation and growth

The Centre for Co-operative Studies at University College Cork is organising and getting involved in a range of events to mark the year. Activities organised to date are shown below. These will be updated regularly so please come back again for updates.

The Centre for Co-operative Studies will host the ILCU Photo Archive which will be open to the public for the full month of May.
The rich history of the movement means that the fascinating credit union story deserves to be told time and time again. This exhibition will allow credit union members and members of the public an opportunity to explore how a small number of foresighted individuals founded one of Ireland’s must successful cooperatives - the credit union movement. The exhibition takes you on a journey from the movement’s beginning in 1958 to the present day.
