2.      PhD History Bursary

Universities Ireland, the body that promotes collaboration between universities in Northern Ireland and the Republic of Ireland, is offering four bursaries to students commencing post-graduate study on a topic relating to the 1912-1923 period in Ireland, the decade of the First World War and the division of the island into the states of Ireland (Irish Free State) and Northern Ireland. Applications are particularly welcome this year from students undertaking work on the impact of events in 1917 on this island.

This bursary scheme is part of a wider inter-university initiative by the universities on the island of Ireland entitled ‘1912-1923: Reflecting on a decade of War and Revolution in Ireland’ that is making a high-level, scholarly and sustained contribution to reflection on this vital period by the island’s intellectual leaders, the ten universities (and particularly their departments of history). The initiative also involves a series of annual international conferences.

There are four bursaries of €6,500 and they must be taken up for the academic year 2017-2018. While it is not required that the study be completed in 2017, there will be no further award for study in following years.
