Annual Eli Lilly postgraduate scholarships for Academic Excellence

The annual Eli Lilly undergraduate and postgraduate scholarships for academic excellence were recently presented to students from this School at an event hosted by the UCC Biochemistry and Biotechnology Society on 18th February last.‌ 

The annual Eli Lilly postgraduate scholarship for academic excellence was recently awarded to Masters in Biotechnology student, Aaron Walsh (BSc Genetics, MSc Biotechnology). Aaron is currently conducting a PhD under the supervision of Dr Paul Cotter at Teagasc Food Research Centre and UCC.

Recipients of the Eli Lilly undergraduate awards for academic excellence in Biochemistry were David O’Sullivan (4th year Biochemistry student) and Linda Murphy (3rd year Biochemistry student). Mr Gary Kirby, senior personnel at Eli Lilly and Dr Deirdre Buckley, Eli Lilly were among those present at a reception hosted by the UCC Biochemistry & Biotechnology Society.

Eli Lilly and UCC have several partnerships that include participation of Eli Lilly staff in curriculum development, through the provision of guest lectures, student placement and tours of the Eli Lilly Biotechnology Manufacturing Facility, Kinsale. Co-ordinated this year by Clodagh Kerr, Careers Service, UCC, a number of UCC students, especially from programs in Biotechnology, Chemistry of Pharmaceutical Compounds, and Process and Chemical Engineering, have benefitted from placement in Eli Lilly, and Eli Lilly has employed many UCC graduates.

Eli Lilly and UCC have several partnerships that include engagement in the Masters in Biotechnology program and the annual Eli Lilly Postgraduate Research Symposium in Organic & Pharmaceutical Chemistry. Dr Justin McCarthy, Director of Biotechnology at UCC expressed the appreciation of the College of Science, Engineering and Food Science and Masters in Biotechnology program for the partnership with Eli Lilly and other industries and looked forward to further developments in the future.
