Overview of Programme
The MSc in Applied Environmental Geology CKR53 is a full-time multidisciplinary degree running for 12 months from the date of first registration for the programme. A 24 month part time option CKR54 is also available.
The aim of the MSc programme is to train and educate graduates in multiple areas of Environmental Geology and to provide an understanding of the disciplines, which impinge upon these areas in order to meet the growing demand for such personnel at home and abroad. This M.Sc. in Environmental Geology covers the areas of hydrogeology, contaminated land, engineering geology, applied geophysics, geoinformatics, environmental monitoring and assessment, environmental regulation, offshore environmental geology, field geology techniques and an industry based environmental geology research project.
The courses have been designed with the current needs of industry taken on board. Emphasis on real world, industry based examples is prevalent throughout.
The School of Biological, Earth and Environmental Sciences are responsible for the MSc programme. Various other UCC and industry partners also contribute to the programme.
Entry and Eligibility
A candidate for the MSc in Applied Environmental Geology must have obtained at least a Second Class Honours, Grade II degree in any Geoscience or relevant equivalent area. In addition, level 8 graduates with relevant professional qualifications or relevant experience but not the relevant degree classification may also apply for entry and each case will be judged on a case-by case basis as to their suitability for the programme, subject to the approval of the Head of School of Biological, Earth and Environmental Sciences. The number of places is limited and selection will be made on the candidate's performance in his/her primary degree and experience. Where relevant, candidates will have to prove their proficiency in the English language (spoken and written).

Fees for the programme can be seen at http://www.ucc.ie/en/financeoffice/fees/. There will be an additional fee of €1000 to cover the costs associated with undertaking fieldwork as part of the taught component of the programme.
A candidate for the MSc Degree in Applied Environmental Geology must:
1. Register full-time for the academic year (Part I October– April) and Part II (May – September) (total 12 months).
2. Pursue a full-time programme of study comprising taught modules to the value of 60 credits and a Research dissertation (30 credits) as detailed below.
3. Achieve an aggregate of at least 50%, with not less than 40% in each module across the taught modules in Part I to be eligible to proceed to Part II.
4. Achieve at least 50% in art II of the Programme to be eligible for the award of an MSc Degree in Applied Environmental Geology.

Part II (30 credits) [April – September]

The wide-ranging module content and advanced fieldwork experience on offer in this Masters programme will allow graduates to enter a wide range of geoscience/ environmental science orientated careers. The programme is built on strong links with industry and government agencies. 30 of the 90 credits involve an industry based independent research project with the majority of the taught course components delivered through field and laboratory based activities. The course offers a unique opportunity for international students to gain EU based work experience while studying for their Masters. There is currently a global high demand for graduates with environmental geology skills and that this is projected to grow in the coming years. Key employers
in the sector include government and local government agencies, larger engineering practices and smaller scale consultancies specializing in environmental geology, engineering geology and hydrogeology.
