Carmel Murphy holds a BA in English and History and a Masters degree from University College Cork. Currently, she is completing a Ph.D. thesis in the School of English at UCC under the supervision of Professor Graham Allen. The project examines the pivotal position which Walter Scott has been awarded in terms of the genesis of the historical novel, and offers a re-evaluation of historical fiction in the Romantic era. Her research incorporates a particular focus on traditions of Jacobin and Anti-Jacobin historical fiction, and the work of William Godwin and Mary Shelley. For the purposes of this research, she was awarded a UCC College of Arts, Celtic Studies and Social Sciences Ph.D. Scholarship.
