Biography

Avril Buchanan is a PhD student in the School of English UCC. Her work explores the use of the Renaissance, initially by nineteenth century male writers including, Jacob Burckhardt, John Addington Symonds, Walter Pater, and Oscar Wilde. Following assessment of the creation of the Renaissance as a ‘homo-hotspot’ she then addresses the use of the period by nineteenth-, twentieth-century and contemporary female authors, including, George Eliot, Virginia Woolf, Sarah Dunant, Jeanette Winterson, and Maureen Duffy, amongst others, as a means of establishing a history of sexuality for women.
