Rakugo: Japanese “Sit-Down” Comedy in UCC Performers: Yanagiya Kyotaro and Shunputei Shotaro

10 Nov 2017

Europeans are used to stand-up comedy, but rakugo comedians are different. The only thing common is that the comedian is alone on stage, but he kneels on a cushion and does not move for the entire length of the story. All he uses as props are a fan and a handkerchief called tenugui. Despite being highly stylised, rakugo continues to entertain its fans in Japan. Now you have the unique chance to get to known this fun and fascinating genre of Japanese performance in Cork.

Master Kyotaro is one of Tokyo’s most popular performers. Tickets for his solo shows sell out within minutes.

Japanese and English will be spoken during the events; however, no knowledge of Japanese is required to enjoy this thrilling insight into traditional Japanese entertainment, or to meet these wonderful performers.

Time and Venue of the Performance:

Saturday 18th November, 2pm
University College Cork, Aula Maxima
Free Entry – Please make sure to arrive early to make sure you get a good seat
