After a childhood in Glasgow and study at the Architectural Association and the Royal College of Art in London, Prof. McCartney worked on bioclimatic and environmental architecture. He is the author of Practical Solar Heating, (available in five languages) and over 50 research or technical publications. In the past decade he has been a consultant to more than a dozen companies and institutions. He is a regular contributor to the doctoral programme of the Oslo School of Architecture.
After 10 years teaching at the Architectural Association, he became Deputy Head and Director of Architectural Research at the Portsmouth School of Architecture. There he led a research project which culminated in the construction of the Portsmouth Smart Homes for people with physical disabilities.
In 2001 he was joint winner of an international competition organised by the Royal Institute of British Architects for the design of a sustainable school.
In 2006 he was appointed by University College Cork to be the first Director of the Cork Centre for Architectural Education.
