Why We Created This Website

Although so many people have aphasia, research shows that the general public does not know what aphasia is. Stroke survivors and their families also report a need for more understanding about aphasia and how to access relevant supports.

Dr Helen Kelly at UCC invited stroke survivors with aphasia and a Digital Humanities student, to co-design a website to raise awareness of aphasia. Our discussions shaped the content of this website. We focussed on the information that stroke survivors with aphasia need to know from the perspectives of our group with aphasia.

We want to show the impact of aphasia on people’s lives, our UCC Aphasia Home Café, living successfully with aphasia and to provide links to resources that would be useful for stroke survivors and their families.

We designed the website to make it accessible for stroke survivors and so included many short videoclips, with a small amount of text, and links to resources for people to find out more detailed information about stroke and aphasia.
