Investigating the effects of an exercise intervention on gut bacteria, mood and cognition in individuals with Major Depressive Disorder

Study Description

This study is being carried out to better understand the effects that regular exercise (like running or cycling) has on the mood and depressive symptoms of people living with depression, and to investigate some of the reasons behind the effects of exercise.

Eligibility

Male and female

Age: 18-59 years

-          Current diagnosis of depression but living in the community

-          Otherwise in generally good health

-          Not currently undertaking regular cardiorespiratory exercise training

Study Requirements

What’s involved in participating.

Visits

Four study visits in total. A screening visit to determine eligibility and to collect demographic information. Study visit 2, baseline data will be collected for all measures and will be the start point for the intervention period. Study visit 2 will occur half way through the exercise intervention. The last study visit will occur at the end of the exercise intervention.

Timeline

12 weeks (~3 months)

Procedure

Participants will either be allocated to the control group, or to the exercise intervention group. If in the exercise group, participants will be asked to complete regular aerobic exercise training at a frequency, intensity and duration relevant to their baseline fitness levels (specific exercise programs and information will be provided to participants).

Any special requirements

Saliva samples will be taken upon awakening the morning of each of the three main study visits. Faecal samples will also be collected by participants. The specific times and instructions on how to collect these samples will be given to participants.
