Paul Moore - Co-founder, Rebel Chilli
Paul Moore set up the Rebel Chilli sauce brand while studying BIS at UCC. The spicy condiments are now stocked in over 300 stores across Ireland and the award winning company recently expanded its market into the UK and Dubai. Paul and his team have ambitious plans for development and recently added hot new additions to the range including Chillionaire, a five-chilli-rated sauce. Paul talks to us about how he balanced student life with managing a budding start-up.
Course/subjects studied in University College Cork:
I studied Business Information Systems in UCC. I began in 2010 and graduated in 2014.
Best memory of UCC:
The best memory I have is probably the day I graduated. It was such a laugh with my friends and my class and such a relief after the final exams!
How has your time at UCC helped you to get to where you are now?
It has helped me in a lot of ways. I've been able to use the friendships and contacts made in UCC to help in growing my business. Also, my degree in BIS helped me when I was setting up Rebel Chilli after graduating. I've also been able to go back to UCC when looking for information and advice in the years since graduating.
What is your advice to current UCC students?
Enjoy every second because they are the most enjoyable and stress-free years you have!! Also, if you have a business idea, the best time to give it a go is just after or during college, so use the time wisely.
What person/people at UCC had the most positive influence on you?
I would say that our class in BIS was quite close and we all got on, so probably them.
Were you involved in any Clubs or Societies?
Unfortunately not! I didn't have time with Rebel Chilli. I joined the rowing team for a very short period of time, but hurt my ankle soon after. I would have ended up in Rio otherwise.
Favourite UCC legend or superstition:
Walking over the crest will mean you fail your exams/get you pregnant. I can't remember which one it is, but I don't think I walked over the crest until I graduated!
