JP McMahon - Michelin-Starred Chef
Michelin-starred chef, restauranteur, author and art historian - JP McMahon is a true Renaissance man. His EatGalway restaurant group includes Aniar Restaurant, Cava Bodega, Eat Gastropub and Aniar Boutique Cookery School.
JP is committed to the educational and ethical aspects of food and is organiser of the international chef symposium, ‘Food on the Edge’. He also lectures in History of Art, University College Cork
Course/subjects studied in UCC
I took English and Art History for my degree with French and Philosophy in first year.
Best memory of UCC
Talking part in the series of round tables organised by Professor James Elkins. I attended this series in my final year. It was great to have so many international art historians in Cork.
How has your time at UCC helped you to get to where you are now?
I developed as a person, both socially and intellectually. It gave me confidence to pursue my own ambitions. Though I work in the food industry now, I've written a cookbook. Learning how to write was something that I developed in UCC.
What is your advice to current UCC students?
Enjoy your time in College. Read fast and read widely! Follow your desire. Go on excursions or trips and develop your interests off campus as well.
What person/people at UCC had the most positive influence on you?
James Elkins. He was a great writer and teacher with a broad interest base. All the Art History department were great - Flavio, Sabine, Simon, and Francis. I learnt so much from them all.
Were you involved in any Clubs or Societies?
We re-established the visual art society.
Favourite UCC legend or superstition
I never knew any!
