    Michelle Donovan is the COO of Tapstak, a company she founded with her father, Tony. Tapstak aims to simplify interaction using smartphones.     Tracey Kennedy was recently appointed as the first female County Board Chair in Cork GAA history. The proud Killeagh woman’s involvement with the GAA started with her local club and led to her taking on the roles of PRO and Vice-Chair of Cork GAA. A teacher by trade, she currently works as Deputy Principal in Carrigaline Community School. Tracey talks to us about her road from UCC to the County Board and how her love of English led to a career in teaching.

    Arts graduate, Ed Donovan, has forged a successful career in the healthcare sector - from working in a leading outpatient radiology group in the U.S. to managing a private hospital in Dublin. In 2010, he channelled this experience into founding his own company, Advanced Medical Services (AMS), which offers a screening service that is affordable and easily accessible to the public.     Anne Sommerfield - Natural History Producer/Director

    Anne Sommerfield is an award-winning Producer/Director specialising in natural history films, documentaries and factual programming. Her career began on the Emmy nominated ‘Meerkat Manor’ and in 2008 she was nominated for an award at the Jackson Hole Film Festival for her direction of the conservation film, ‘There's a Rhino in my House’. Recent projects include the BAFTA nominated, 'Great Barrier Reef with David Attenborough' and the BBC series ‘Animals in Love’, which she directed and produced. She has just completed ‘Animals with Cameras’ – BBC’s first major natural history series to be written and directed entirely by women, which is currently airing on BBC One. Read our interview with Anne below:

    Henrietta McKervey - Fiction Writer

    Henrietta McKervey is an award-winning fiction writer. Her first two novels, ‘What Becomes of Us’ and ‘The Heart of Everything’ were published to much critical acclaim with fans including Frank McGuinness and Eilís Ni Dhuibhne. She won the Maeve Binchy Travel Award in 2014, the Hennessy First Fiction Award in 2015 and the Irish Writers’ Centre Jack Harte Bursary in 2016. Her third book is due for publication in June. Henrietta’s father, the late Prof. Tony McKervey, was Professor of Organic Chemistry at UCC from 1976 to 1990. Read our interview with Henrietta below:

    Maeve Buckley is Director and Co-Owner of the sports marketing consultancy, Line Up Sports. She is known as one of the most influential women in Irish sport having served as a Director of the National Sports Campus Development Authority and as a Board Member of the Federation of Irish Sport. Over the course of her career Maeve has worked with clients such as Liverpool FC, Real Madrid, FC Barcelona, the Ryder Cup and others. Prior to establishing Line Up in 2010 she was CEO of the sports and events agency, Platinum One. She is currently in the process of setting up a new agency, Leadingsport.     To celebrate International Women’s Day on 8th March, we meet our oldest known female graduate, 103-year-old Mairín Hughes. Mairín qualified with a BSc and HDE from UCC in the 1930’s. After graduating, she worked in the Pathology Lab in the Dept. of Medicine for 14 years before marrying her late husband and relocating to Dublin. With a keen interest in music, literature and nature Mairín is as lively today as she was in her college days! She talks to us about her time at UCC.

    Claire Ivers - Human Rights Consultant

    Claire Ivers worked for Human Rights Watch (HRW) in Brussels for over a decade where she was responsible for the organisation’s advocacy work with the EU and its institutions. During this time, she also co-chaired the influential Human Rights and Democracy Network, a coalition of over 50 human rights and democracy organisations. Claire left HRW late last year and set up a human rights consultancy practice that provides advisory and capacity building services to national and international human rights organisations. Amongst other projects, she is currently leading a project at the EU level for Anti-Slavery International focusing on forced and child labour in global value chains. With a father who worked for Ford in Cork, a degree in Electronic Engineering was a natural progression for David as a car-mad youngster. He is currently back in Europe, studying for a PhD in Cambridge on the socio-ecological systems in the Borderlands area of Kenya and Tanzania.     Tadhg Coakley is a Mallow-born writer and the author of 'The First Sunday in September', his debut novel which is launched this week. The book tells the story of a fictional All-Ireland Hurling Final Sunday when Clare play Cork. Award-winning author, Donal Ryan said about it: ‘the stories are vibrant and authentic, brimming with the intensity and the desire and the triumphs and failures that make sporting occasions such a sublime allegory for our human condition’. Tadhg is currently completing a contemporary literary crime novel set in Cork and has just begun a book of essays on sport. We talk to him about his time at UCC.

    UCC Arts graduate, Cllr. Mick Finn, is the Lord Mayor of Cork city. Cllr. Finn, who represents the Cork South Central constituency, is the first Independent Lord Mayor in 70 years. He has had a varied career, working as a journalist in Ireland and Australia before turning his attention to local politics. He has a special interest in the areas of sport and education having coached GAA in schools and delivered programmes for students at risk of early school leaving. Trocaire’s programmes in Zimbabwe are varied; Sarah and her colleagues focus on everything from human rights issues to working with farmers experiencing drought.     A Masters Degree in Organic Horticulture led beekeeper, Mark Riordan, to develop an innovative approach to commercial beekeeping at his family farm in Myrtleville. His company, Hive Mind (‘we keep the bees, you keep the honey’), allows corporates and individuals to sponsor hives in exchange for an annual fee. The business is going from strength to strength, with companies like Airbnb and the Market Lane Group serving up pots of the delicious Cork honey to their customers and staff.     Fans of RTE’s Fair City will know her as Aoife, one of the show’s most reviled characters, but Lesley Conroy is now taking on a role of a different kind in Decadent Theatre’s 'The Mai’, which has just finished up at the Everyman. The versatile actress, who has worked with the likes of Brendan Gleeson and Mia Farrow, is also a fluent Irish speaker and can count roles in TG4 productions among her credits. She is due to appear again on our screens this autumn in Sharon Horgan’s comedy-drama series ‘Women on the Verge’, alongside fellow Cork woman, Eileen Walsh. We chat to Lesley about her UCC days.

    Ailís Ní Ríain, Composer and Playwright

    Ailís Ní Ríain is a contemporary classical composer and playwright. The Yorkshire-based artist was the winner of the prestigious Paul Hamlyn Award for Artists in 2016. Her site-specific music-theatre work, ‘I Used to Feel’, was recently performed at the Dublin Fringe Festival. This atmospheric one-woman show is set in a hotel room and combines a mixture of movement, sign language, text and music. Ní Ríain has also gained much success as a theatre writer; her play, ‘The Tallest Man in the World’ was a finalist at the renowned Eugene O’Neill Playwright’s Conference in the U.S. The production, which was premiered by Corcadorca, is due to be staged at The Tank Theatre, New York in 2019.

Over the last two and half years, Fowlam has worked with a variety of organisations, including Health Education England, UK Visas and Immigration, Balliol College Oxford and the Department for Education. A highlight for Frances has been working with Lego - if only for that fact that her children were highly impressed! We chat to Frances about her college days.

    Alumni Spotlight: Linda Plover - Musician, Performer and Co-founder of Blue Monkey PR

    Originally from Lincoln in the UK, Linda Plover moved to Ireland in 2002 to study music at UCC, gaining an honours degree. A multi-instrumentalist, she sings, plays bodhrán, tin whistle and guitar and released two singles with alt-folk outfit Chunky Planet during her time at UCC. She is also the co-founder of Blue Monkey PR, an agency specialising in promoting music events and recording artists. A member of independent theatre company Burning Paper Productions, Linda will perform in '4-Play', a new four-part theatre production, bringing together four writers, each with a story to tell. Revealing their innermost thoughts and experiences, each play is performed by each writer, delving into a personal journey of self-discovery and one moment that profoundly changed and defined their lives. 4-Play takes place on 22nd November at the Firkin Crane Theatre, Cork, see www.firkincrane.ie for details.

    Mike Sheehan is the CEO and co-founder of Milis Bio, a company which designs protein based low-calorie flavourings. Milis Bio was recently named Bank of Ireland/IGNITE Business of the Year for 2018. Mike's background in Neuroscience, studying the link between the brain and nutrition, inspired him to develop a healthy sugar substitute. After seeing a gap in the market, Milis Bio was born and the company now intend to apply the same method of protein design to other food flavourings. Dr. Mullins graduated with a PhD in Plant Science from UCC before joining Teagasc as a researcher in 2002. His expertise in the area of crop improvement is especially important at a time when the Irish tillage sector is undergoing significant challenges. We talk to Ewan about his UCC days and how it taught him the importance of resilience, patience and problem-solving.
